At the February 8 meeting, Republicans also voted against Resolutions that added an additional staff member to the Department of Public Works and a Resolution that added 9 additional staff members to the Department of Social Services.
In an unprecedented move the Albany County Executive broke with the majority of his own party and supported the Republican efforts to control wasteful and excessive spending. County Executive Michael Breslin vetoed a resolution that increased the Coroner’s budget. The resolution passed over the opposition of all of the Republican Legislators.
Minority Leader Christine Benedict, (R-Colonie) stated “We applaud the County Executive for agreeing with the Republican principle of less spending. We look forward to working with him as the temptation for increased spending lingers in our chambers with wasteful resolutions.”
Benedict said “The Republican party will fight all attempts to saddle the taxpayers with more burdens. Property taxpayers have done their fair share; it is time for the County to tighten its belt. ”
Richard Mendick, (C-Selkirk), Minority member of the Audit and Finance Committee who lead the fight on the floor in opposition to the Coroner's resolution, said “The 2010 County budget anticipates spending $10 million more than it will take in. The County will have to dip into their reserves to balance this budget. We should be looking for ways to cut costs not grow them. It is irresponsible to allow increases in departmental spending when the County is looking at such a bleak financial picture.”
